Sunday, January 25 — Prayer Begins with Listening

Scripture: 1 Samuel 3:1–10

Prayer often starts with talking, but in Scripture it frequently begins with listening. Samuel hears his name called but doesn’t recognize God’s voice at first. He assumes it’s something familiar and keeps missing what God is doing. Only after guidance does he learn a simple posture of prayer: “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”

Many people feel unsure about prayer because they expect certainty, clarity, or immediate answers. This story reminds us that prayer is learned over time. Listening prayer creates space for God to speak in quiet ways—through wisdom, peace, or gentle nudges rather than dramatic moments.

Prayer doesn’t require knowing what to say. It begins with showing up and being open.

Reflection Question:
What might it look like for you to listen for God today instead of trying to figure everything out?

Practice:
Sit quietly for two minutes and simply pray, “I’m listening.”

Prayer:
God, slow me down enough to listen. Help me notice your presence today. Amen.
