Hope in Unexpected Kindness – Thursday, 12/04/2025
Scripture: Matthew 25:34–40
In Matthew 25, Jesus describes a future scene where people are surprised to learn that, in caring for others, they have been caring for Christ. Feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, welcoming the stranger, visiting the sick and imprisoned—these simple acts of mercy are elevated to holy encounters. “Just as you did it to one of the least of these… you did it to me.”
The Advent story is filled with these kinds of quiet mercies. Mary and Joseph likely experienced kindness from people who offered space, warmth, or help. Their journey and the birth of Jesus were surrounded not only by angels and songs, but by ordinary people extending hospitality. Hope arrived in the world through a combination of divine action and human kindness.
In our own lives, hope is often carried to us by others. A friend’s phone call comes at just the right time. A stranger holds the door when we are struggling. A neighbor drops off a meal without being asked. These moments may seem small, but they remind us that we are seen, valued, and not alone.
Jesus invites us not only to receive this kind of kindness, but also to offer it. When we do, we become participants in God’s work of bringing hope into the world.
Reflection Question:
When has an unexpected kindness renewed your hope or reminded you that God had not forgotten you?
Action Step:
Be on the lookout today for one person you can bless in a simple but meaningful way—a note, a favor, a listening ear, or a word of encouragement.
Prayer:
God of compassion, open my eyes to those who need a reminder of Your love today. Make me a vessel of kindness and a bearer of hope. Amen.
