Words That Carry Us - Monday, June 15

Scripture: Luke 11:1–4

Most of us know what it feels like to run out of words. Sometimes it happens at a hospital bedside. Sometimes it happens in grief. Sometimes it happens in the car after a hard day, when all we can do is sigh. Prayer can feel difficult when we think we have to come up with the right words, the right tone, or the right amount of faith.

That may be why the disciples’ request is so comforting: “Lord, teach us to pray.” They did not ask Jesus for a lecture on prayer. They asked for help. They had seen something in Jesus’ prayer life that they wanted to learn.

Jesus answered with words simple enough for children and deep enough for a lifetime. The Lord’s Prayer gives us words when our own words fail. It gives us a path when we do not know where to begin. It reminds us that prayer is not performance. It is relationship.

Today, begin where Jesus begins. Slowly pray the first words: “Our Father.” Let them remind you that you are not speaking into emptiness. You are turning toward the One who has already turned toward you.

Reflection Question: Where in your life do you need prayer to carry you when your own words feel thin or absent?

Practice: Pray the Lord’s Prayer once today, slowly. Pause after the first two words: “Our Father.” Sit with them for a few breaths before continuing.

Prayer: Our Father, teach me to pray. When I do not have the right words, help me trust that I still belong with you. Let this prayer carry me today. Amen.
