What We Really Need - Wednesday, 07/08/2026

Scripture: John 6:25–35

After Jesus fed the five thousand, the crowd came looking for him.

At one level, that makes sense. They had been hungry, and Jesus had fed them. If someone can provide bread in the wilderness, you would probably want to stay close.

But Jesus sees something deeper. The crowd wants more bread. Jesus wants to give them himself.

He says, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

That does not mean ordinary hunger disappears. People still need food, shelter, work, medicine, friendship, rest, and help. Jesus cares about those needs.

But beneath many of our needs is a deeper hunger.

We hunger for security.
We hunger for peace.
We hunger for love.
We hunger for belonging.
We hunger for forgiveness.
We hunger for meaning.
We hunger for a life that is held by something stronger than our own ability to manage everything.

Jesus does not simply give us a resource and step back. Jesus gives us himself.

At Communion, we come with open hands. We receive bread and cup. We remember that Christ meets us not because we are self-sufficient, but because we are hungry.

The bread of life is not earned. It is received.

Practice: Before your next meal or snack today, pause for a few seconds. Pray: “Jesus, bread of life, feed the hunger beneath my hunger.” Then name one deeper hunger you are carrying.

Prayer: Jesus, bread of life, I bring you my ordinary needs and my deeper hunger. Feed me with your grace. Meet me where I am empty. Remind me that I do not have to earn your presence; I only have to receive it. Amen.
