Rest Helps Us Notice – Thursday, 06/25/2026

Scripture: Genesis 2:1–3; Psalm 46:1–11

Genesis says that after the work of creation, God rested, blessed the seventh day, and made it holy.

That is a beautiful sequence: God works. God finishes. God rests. God blesses. God makes holy.

Before human beings accomplish anything, creation is already called good. Before striving, there is gift. Before productivity, there is blessing.

That matters because many of us live as if everything depends on us. If I stop, everything will fall apart. If I rest, I will get behind. If I do not keep checking, fixing, producing, worrying, and managing, something will go wrong.

But Scripture tells a different story. Rest is not laziness. Rest is trust. Sabbath — time set apart for rest and worship — is a way of saying, “God is God, and I am not.”

The world does not rest on my shoulders.
My worth does not depend on how much I produce.
I can pause because God is still at work.

Rest helps us receive life as gift. And when we receive life as gift, praise becomes possible again.

Practice: Take one Sabbath-shaped pause today. It may be ten minutes outside, a walk without headphones, coffee without multitasking, or a meal without rushing. During that pause, pray: “Hallowed be thy name.”

Prayer: Creator God, teach me to rest without guilt. Help me trust that you are still working even when I pause. Open my eyes to the goodness already present around me. Amen.
