Scripture: Matthew 6:7–13
Jesus begins the prayer not with a request, but with a relationship: “Our Father.” That matters. Before we ask for bread, forgiveness, guidance, or deliverance, Jesus invites us to remember who God is and who we are.
Many of us approach prayer as if we have to convince God to care. We explain, plead, bargain, or try to sound more faithful than we feel. But Jesus says the Father already knows what we need. Prayer is not a way to get God’s attention. Prayer is how we live in the attention God is already giving.
For some, the word “Father” feels warm and safe. For others, it may feel complicated. Jesus is not asking us to project human failures onto God. Jesus is showing us the faithful love of God: near, attentive, compassionate, trustworthy, and present.
This prayer does not ask you to perform. It invites you to belong.
Reflection Question: What changes in your prayer life when you begin with belonging instead of performance?
Practice: Before asking God for anything today, say: “God, I belong to you.” Then sit quietly for one minute.
Prayer: Loving God, help me trust that I do not have to perform for you. Teach me to pray as someone who is already loved. Amen.
