Scripture: Luke 24:28–35; Psalm 145:14–21
On the road to Emmaus, two disciples walked with the risen Jesus without recognizing him.
They were disappointed, confused, and grieving. They had hoped Jesus was the one to redeem Israel, but everything seemed to have fallen apart.
Then they invited the stranger to stay. At the table, Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them.
And their eyes were opened.
There is something powerful about that pattern: taken, blessed, broken, given.
It is the pattern of Communion. It is also the pattern of grace.
Sometimes we recognize Christ not when everything is solved, but when bread is broken. Not when we finally feel in control, but when we sit at the table with open hands.
Psalm 145 says, “The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season. You open your hand, satisfying the desire of every living thing.”
God opens God’s hand to us.
Prayer teaches us to open ours.
Open hands to receive.
Open hands to release.
Open hands to share.
Open hands to trust.
“Give us this day our daily bread” is not a prayer of defeat. It is a prayer of freedom. We do not have to secure the whole future. We do not have to pretend we are self-sufficient. We do not have to carry tomorrow before tomorrow comes.
We can come hungry, honest, and open.
And Christ meets us there.
Practice: Hold your hands open for one minute today. As you breathe in, pray: “God, I receive what you give.” As you breathe out, pray: “God, I release what I cannot control.”
Prayer: Christ, bread of life, meet me at the table of this day. Open my eyes to your presence. Open my hands to receive your grace. Open my heart to share your love. Give me daily bread, and make me daily bread for others. Amen.
