Leaving Your Water Jar - Friday, 03/13/26
Scripture Reading: John 4:27-42
She came for water and left the jar behind. That small detail is easy to miss, but it says everything about what had happened. She'd arrived at the well carrying what she needed for the day's work. She left carrying something she couldn't have planned for — an encounter that changed her purpose for the afternoon. The task that had brought her there was suddenly secondary to the story she had to tell.
Notice what she doesn't say when she goes back to her community. She doesn't say, 'I've figured it all out.' She doesn't present a polished sermon. She says, 'Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did.' It's honest. It's personal. And it's a question, not a proclamation: 'Could this be the Messiah?' She invites people into the same uncertainty she's holding. And many believe because of her testimony.
In the United Methodist tradition, we talk about the importance of both personal faith and communal witness. These are not two separate things. The woman's individual encounter at the well becomes the turning point for an entire community. Personal transformation and communal renewal flow from the same source. What God does in one person's life, when shared honestly, can open doors for others who are thirsty but haven't found their way to the well yet.
You don't need a perfect story or a tidy ending to share what you're experiencing. You just need the willingness to say: 'Something happened, and I'm still figuring it out, but come and see.' Leaving your water jar means releasing the thing that brought you to the moment in order to carry something better. What might God be asking you to set down today?
Reflection Question
Is there something you've been carrying out of habit or necessity that might need to be set down so you can carry something more important?
Action Step
Think of one person in your life who might be spiritually thirsty. Today, reach out to them — not to explain anything, just to connect. A text, a call, a note. Just 'come and see' energy — genuine, low-pressure, present.
Prayer
God, help me hold my plans loosely enough that I can walk away from them when you offer something better. Let what you do in me overflow to someone else today.
