Enough for Today – Monday, 07/06/2026

Scripture: Matthew 6:9–13; Matthew 6:25–34

Jesus teaches us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.”

Not tomorrow’s bread.
Not next year’s bread.
Not enough-to-never-worry-again bread.

Daily bread.

That can be harder than it sounds, because many of us spend a lot of energy trying to secure ourselves against an uncertain future. We think, “If I can just get enough money, enough control, enough answers, enough certainty, then I can finally relax.”

But Jesus gently calls us back to today.

In Matthew 6, Jesus tells his followers not to be consumed by worry over tomorrow. He does not say this because tomorrow does not matter. He says it because worry pulls tomorrow’s weight into today’s hands. And today’s hands were not made to carry tomorrow.

Daily bread is a prayer of trust. It is a way of saying, “God, I do not have the whole future figured out. I do not have everything under control. But I am here today, and I trust you to meet me here.”

Sometimes what we need today is actual bread: food, work, shelter, money, help, provision. Sometimes what we need is patience, courage, rest, wisdom, forgiveness, or hope.

Jesus invites us to name the need honestly.

Not everything at once.

Enough for today.

Practice: At the beginning of the day, pray this sentence: “God, the daily bread I need today is __________.” Be specific. Then ask God for enough grace to take the next faithful step.

Prayer: God of daily bread, help me live this day instead of trying to control every tomorrow. Give me what I need for today: enough strength, enough wisdom, enough patience, enough hope. Teach me to trust you one day at a time. Amen.
