Answer Evil with Something Better

Scripture

Romans 12:9–21

Reflection

Paul’s words in Romans are practical and demanding:

Do not repay anyone evil for evil.
Live peaceably, as far as it depends on you.
Do not seek revenge.
Overcome evil with good.

When someone wounds us, evil offers us several tempting responses:

Return the insult.
Spread the story.
Make them suffer.
Become as cruel as they were.
Let hatred take over.

Those responses may feel powerful for a moment, but they allow another person’s behavior to determine who we become.

Paul does not ask us to pretend evil is harmless. He says, “Hate what is evil; hold fast to what is good.”

Christian love is not passive acceptance of abuse or injustice. We can tell the truth, protect people, set boundaries, seek accountability, and oppose wrongdoing without allowing hatred to form our character.

To “overcome evil with good” means refusing to imitate what harmed us.

Truth instead of manipulation.
Courage instead of cruelty.
Justice instead of revenge.
Boundaries instead of bitterness.
Compassion without surrendering wisdom.

Deliverance from evil includes deliverance from becoming the kind of person evil wants us to become.

Practice

Think of one conflict or injustice you are facing.

Ask:

“What would it look like to oppose what is wrong without becoming shaped by it?”

Choose one truthful and constructive action.

Prayer

God of justice and mercy,
give me courage to resist what is wrong without becoming consumed by hatred. Help me choose truth over retaliation, wise boundaries over bitterness, and faithful action over revenge. Keep evil from shaping my heart. Amen.
